Deck measurement, board layout & design handoff
Count a deck surface from its board direction, then keep framing, stairs and railing attached to the accepted design.
Board rows run across the deck; stock pieces run along each row. Rotating the boards changes both, even when deck area stays the same.
Name the job before counting
A surface replacement and a new deck structure are different scopes. Keep the accepted plan, finished height, framing details, stairs and railing with the measurements.
Use actual board face and gap
Nominal lumber names do not supply installed coverage. Enter actual face width and the gap required by the chosen system. Count rows across the board direction.
Check stock lengths and seams
Round stock pieces within each row, then add the allowance. The tool does not reuse offcuts. Seams, picture-frame borders and diagonal work need their own support and cut details.
Keep the rest of the design visible
The framing tool counts members from an accepted plan; it does not choose spans or sizes. Stair geometry does not approve stringers. List railing, footings, ledger, connections, permits and access in the quote.
See the measurement become an order
Example: a 16 × 12 ft surface, boards along the length, 5.5-inch faces, 1/8-inch gaps and 16 ft stock. The chosen allowance is 10%.
This example gives 29 deck surface boards.
- ceil((12 + 0.010417) ÷ (0.458333 + 0.010417)) = 26
- ceil(26 × 1 × (1 + 10/100)) = 29
