Common questions
How do I work out the square footage of a room?
Multiply the length by the width in feet: a 12 × 14 ft room is 168 square feet. For an L-shaped room, take the whole rectangle and subtract the missing corner, or add the two rectangles it splits into.
How many square feet is a 12 × 12 room?
144 square feet, which is 16 square yards or about 13.4 square meters.
How do I turn square feet into square yards?
Divide by 9, because a square yard is 3 × 3 feet: 144 square feet is 16 square yards. Carpet is often priced by the square yard.
How do I measure a triangle or a round area?
A triangle is half the base times the height, with the height measured square to the base: 10 × 8 ÷ 2 = 40 square feet. A circle is 3.1416 × the diameter squared ÷ 4: a 10 ft circle is about 78.5 square feet.
What counts in a home’s square footage?
Appraisers count finished, heated living space, measured from the outside walls. Garages, basements and open porches are counted separately or left out. Add each floor as its own area here.
How to plan the quantity
Measure each room wall to wall at floor level, in feet. A rectangle is length × width. An L-shaped room is the whole rectangle less its missing corner; a triangle is half the base × the height measured square to it; a circle is 3.1416 × the diameter² ÷ 4.
Add each room as its own area so you can check every one. Anything inside a room the floor will not cover, such as a kitchen island or a hearth, goes in as an area “taken away”.
Carpet is often priced by the square yard (square feet ÷ 9). The perimeter of rectangles and L-shapes is the length of baseboard or edging before doorways are subtracted.
Before you order
- This is the measured area, with nothing added for cuts or waste. The flooring, tile and paint calculators add the allowance their materials need.
- For a home’s official size, appraisers count finished, heated living space measured from the outside walls; garages, basements and open porches are counted separately or left out.
Before ordering, read the guide: How much flooring do I need? Square feet, boxes and waste. Or choose another calculator.
