Measure rooms once, then compare an area allowance with the cuts and cartons your chosen layout needs.
Round boxes after combining rooms that use the same product. Rounding each small area separately can overstate the order, while a straight area total can understate awkward layout cuts.
Split the floor into rectangles
Add rooms and closets without overlap. Subtract only areas that remain uncovered. Keep stairs, thresholds and transitions as separate measured items.
Read coverage per carton
Use the package’s coverage, not plank face area multiplied by an assumed piece count. Product and batch differences belong on separate lists.
Compare direction and cuts
The laminate, vinyl and hardwood tools show row and cut allowances. Their conservative layout uses a new plank for each cut position. Reuse requires a usable length and the correct edge; the tool does not assume it.
Match the installation scope
Laminate underlayment, floating or glue-down vinyl, wood fastening and site finishing are different decisions. Keep substrate preparation, moisture assessment, acclimation, trim and furniture movement visible in the written quote.

Example: rooms of 12 × 10 ft and 8 × 6 ft, no exclusions, with a chosen 10% allowance and cartons covering 20 sq ft.
This example gives 10 boxes of flooring.
