This is a geometric purchase allowance. Every cut position consumes a tile; no offcut reuse, blade kerf, edge qualification or installation approval is assumed.
The calculation
- Surface 1: 45 full + 15 cut = 60 tile positions
- 60 × (1 + 10/100), rounded up = 66 tiles
- ceil(66 / 10) = 7 boxes
Material price trends, separate from your quote
These U.S. producer indexes track material prices over time. They are not store prices, labor rates or local installed costs. We do not use them to increase a historical project median.
Historical household spending: the national 2023 AHS median for flooring, carpeting, paneling and ceiling tile was $3,000. Flooring, carpet, paneling and ceiling tiles share this broad category. It is not a laminate, vinyl or hardwood rate. This broader category does not price your specific job.

How to plan the quantity
Add separate rectangles for each floor or wall. Tile dimensions and the joint determine how many whole or cut pieces cross each edge. The list counts a tile for each position, then adds your chosen extra allowance.
The layout clips each tile position to the surface and the first-surface rectangular obstacle. Straight and half-offset rows, a 45-degree diagonal grid, and a two-rectangle herringbone lattice have different cuts. Change orientation or starting offsets to compare borders. Cut positions each consume one tile; usable offcuts are not automatically reused.
Use grout and mortar coverage for the actual tile size, joint, depth and trowel. A package yield from another layout can produce the wrong shopping list.
Before you order
- An opening rarely saves its area in whole tiles. Split large untiled areas into rectangles rather than subtracting small holes from a box count.
- Check substrate preparation and movement-joint details with the installer before ordering setting materials.
