Length and width are the horizontal footprint, including overhangs. Pitch adds the slope. Shown section only; roof details need a measured plan.

The calculation

  1. Section 1: 1,120 sq ft × 1.118 = 1,252.2 sq ft
  2. 1,252.2 × (1 + 10/100) ÷ 33.3333 = 41.32 bundles before rounding.

Material price trends, separate from your quote

These U.S. producer indexes track material prices over time. They are not store prices, labor rates or local installed costs. We do not use them to increase a historical project median.

Historical household spending: the national 2023 AHS median for roofing was $10,000. Roofing projects across differing roof sizes, materials and scopes. Area and material are not held constant. This broader category does not price your specific job.

How to plan the quantity

Measure the horizontal footprint of each roof section, including overhangs. Use the pitch of that section, not the height of the whole house. A second story does not double the roof footprint.

The pitch factor turns the horizontal area into sloped roof area. Add your allowance for cuts, divide by the coverage per bundle, then round up to whole bundles. Starter strips, valley treatment and flashing need their own measured lengths.

Eaves are the lower horizontal edges. Rakes are the sloped outer edges. Enter their combined lengths when you want drip-edge pieces. Use the usable coverage after overlaps, not the full length printed on a piece.

Before you order

  • This is a roof-covering list. Rotten decking, tear-off, labor, disposal, permits, ventilation and flashing are separate quote items.
  • Split different pitches into separate sections. Hips, valleys, dormers and openings need a measured plan; an area allowance does not design their details. Use existing plans or a professional measurement instead of climbing onto a roof.
