Common questions

How many boxes of flooring do I need?

Multiply each room’s length by its width, add your extra for cuts, divide by the square feet printed on the box and round up. Rooms with the same flooring are added together before rounding, so you buy fewer part boxes.

How do I measure a room for flooring?

Measure wall to wall at the widest points, including the floor under movable furniture. Choose L-shape for a room with one corner missing, or split other shapes into rectangles. Add closets you will floor as separate rooms.

How much extra flooring should I buy?

Straight planks in a plain room need the least; a diagonal layout, many doorways or odd shapes need more. The laminate, vinyl plank and hardwood calculators count the cut pieces in your room, which gives a firmer figure than a percentage.

Do I include the area under cabinets?

Leave out areas under fixed cabinets and islands by entering them as area not covered. Include closets you will floor.

How to plan the quantity

Measure each room at its widest dimensions. For an L-shaped room, choose L-shape and enter the missing corner; for other shapes, split the room into rectangles that do not overlap. Subtract only areas that will actually stay uncovered.

Rooms using the same flooring share one combined allowance and box round-up. Different products, colors or batch requirements need separate lists.

Measure doorways and changes of flooring for transitions. Their length does not come from room area, and baseboards may need separate work.

Before you order

This does not lay out plank stagger, carpet seams or sheet-roll cuts. Confirm the layout before ordering a patterned or roll product.
Subfloor leveling, moisture control, underlayment, stairs and trim are outside the box count.
