Tile measurement, layout & overage handoff

Check the grid, border cuts and package rounding before treating floor area as a tile order.

Area is a starting point. Joint width, tile orientation, starting position and obstacles determine which tile positions are full or cut; two layouts with the same area can need different orders.

Define each tiled surface

Measure floors, walls and backsplashes as separate rectangles. For a shower, keep walls, floor, curb and niche returns separate because they may use different tile or trims.

Try the starting layout

Compare orientation and offsets in the layout planner. Look at cuts along both edges. A cut position consumes a tile unless you deliberately verify that an offcut can be reused.

Round the correct package

Add the selected allowance to the piece count, then round to full boxes. Record both tiles needed and tiles inside the boxes. Keep lot, color, trim and spare-piece decisions with the order.

Do not infer setting-material yield

Grout coverage depends on the selected tile and joint. Mortar coverage must match the product and intended application. Keep substrate, waterproofing, movement joints and edge details in the installer’s scope.

Example: one 12 × 10 ft surface, 24 × 12 inch tile, a 1/8-inch joint and 10 tiles per box. The chosen allowance is 10%.

This example gives 7 boxes of tile.
