Turn room measurements into a hanging plan and a finishing schedule, with repairs and rated walls kept separate.
A sheet-area estimate is not a hanging layout or a fire-rated assembly. Select the board and construction details for the actual wall before using the count as an order.
Measure and inspect the framing
Record walls, ceilings, openings and changes in height. Mark backing needs and services before covering them. Check what inspections must happen while work remains visible. Keep repair patches separate from new walls so a whole-room allowance does not hide a small but complicated matching task.
Choose the board and layout
USG’s Sheetrock Installation and Finishing Guide J371 covers panel selection, fitting, fastening and finishing. Match the board type, thickness, layers and fasteners to the accepted assembly. Lay out joints against framing and count real sheets; subtracting the area of a small opening does not always save one.
Buy the finishing system
List sheets, compatible fasteners, tape, compound and corner treatment. Measure joints and outside corners for the accessory list. Check tape and compound compatibility in USG’s instructions. Keep the intended paint finish and light conditions in the agreement so “finished” means the same thing to both parties.
Hang with the specified details
Use the accepted fastening and joint arrangement, taking care around concealed wiring and pipes. J371 describes scoring, cutting, fitting and fastening panels. Do not turn an area-based screw allowance into a fastening schedule. Resolve damaged board or missing support before joint treatment hides it.
Finish in separate drying stages
Embed the specified tape, then build and feather subsequent coats according to the compound system. USG J371 requires coats to dry or harden before further work and notes that conditions affect drying. Sand and prime as appropriate to that system; an agreed completion day does not make wet compound ready.
Repair the cause and the assembly
For water damage, resolve the leak before replacing board. USG’s Repair Drywall guidance requires like materials when restoring a fire-rated assembly and points to GA-225. Keep rated-wall repairs with a qualified installer; matching the visible paint alone does not restore the underlying assembly.

This example gives 13 drywall sheets by area.
- Surface area: 352 sq ft
- ceil(352 × (1 + 10/100) ÷ 32) = 13
- Single-layer sheet allowance × 1 layers = 13 sheets.
