Garage door replacement cost, itemized
A 16 × 7 ft insulated steel garage door for a two-car opening costs $1,195 at today’s store price, tracks and springs included, and a 9 × 7 ft one-car door $665. Each day one installer works adds about $514 to the price, overhead and profit included (U.S. median wage). Enter your door, your city and the installer’s time, or type a quote to see how many hours of work it pays for.
Your garage door at today’s prices
Each figure says where it comes from: the door at a store’s posted price, the installer’s time at what a garage door technician costs an employer where you live, and the share of the price finish carpentry contractors spend on overhead and keep as profit. The door price, the time and the overhead share are yours to change.
Filled in as an example: one 16 × 7 ft Holmes Silver Series insulated steel door, white, raised panel, at Sutherlands’s price; the installer’s time is not yet typed. Type over any of it with your own door and figures.

| Part | Cost | Where the figure comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Garage door: 1 door, 16 × 7 ft | $1,195 | Holmes Silver Series insulated steel garage door, 16 × 7 ft, white, traditional raised panel at $1,195 each, Sutherlands in Harrisonville, MO, . Holmes’s manual says each door comes with its tracks, brackets, hinges, rollers, cables, a spring kit and its springs. |
| Rear track hangers and the stop molding around the opening | Not priced | Holmes’s manual says the rear track hangers that hold the tracks up from the ceiling are not included with the door; the installer adds them, with the molding that seals the door against the frame. |
| A new opener | Not priced | Not added: your old opener goes on the new door. Ask whether the quote moves it over or puts in a new one. |
| Taking away the old door | Not priced | Clopay’s price guide says a replacement price usually includes removing the old door and disposing of it: ask whether yours does. |
| Labor | Not added | Type the garage door installer’s time above. Each worker-day adds about $514 to the price, overhead and profit included. |
| Materials at today’s prices | $1,195 | $1,195 a door. Not yet the job’s price: the labor and the garage door installer’s overhead and profit come in when you type the garage door installer’s time. Not priced, so not in this total: rear track hangers and the stop molding around the opening, a new opener and taking away the old door. Not counted: new trim, weather seal or framing repairs around the opening, a permit where your city requires one, sales tax and delivery. |
What an hour costs: Holmes’s own manual puts a typical installation of this door at 9 to 12 hours, and taking out an old door at 1 to 3 more, but it is written for owners as well as professionals and no public body publishes an installer’s time, so the estimate counts the time you type and no other. Mechanical door repairers (the BLS group that includes garage door technicians) in the U.S. earn a median $26.79 an hour (BLS, May 2025). Benefits make up 30.5% of what construction employers spend an hour on pay and benefits (all trades, BLS, June 2026), so an hour of a garage door installer at that wage costs an employer about $39, and an 8-hour day about $308.

What moves the price
- The size. A two-car opening takes one 16 ft door or two 8 or 9 ft doors; two single doors cost more than one double at this store, and each needs its own opener.
- The door itself. The example is an insulated steel door with a polystyrene core, R-value 6.3 on the seller’s page. A door with thicker insulation, windows in the top section or a carriage-house face is a different door: type the price you are quoted for it.
- The opener. Your old one can go on the new door. A new one, a Genie StealthDrive 750 belt drive, is $229.99 a door at the same store, plus the time to put it up: choose it in the estimate above. Ask whether the quote moves your old opener over or puts in a new one.
- What the old door hides. Rot in the wood framing around the opening, found when the old door comes down, has to be repaired before the new door goes up, at a price of its own.
- Taking the old door away. Clopay’s price guide says a replacement price usually includes removing and disposing of the old door; check that yours says so.
The springs are the dangerous part
A garage door is balanced by springs under strong tension. Holmes’s installation manual for this door says that if the old door has torsion springs (springs wound on a bar above the door), you should not take the door or the springs down yourself: have a qualified door repair service remove them, because a spring released without the right training and tools can cause serious or fatal injury.
Doing it yourself
The same manual says an owner can install the door if they have help, because it may weigh up to 500 lb, the right tools and some mechanical skill, and follow the instructions closely. It puts a typical installation at 9 to 12 hours, with 1 to 3 more to take out an old door, and warns that you cannot get out through the opening for about 5 hours while the track goes in. Holmes’s manual lists every part in the box.
Whose wage this is
The installer’s wage is the one BLS publishes for mechanical door repairers, the occupation whose job titles include garage door technician and overhead door technician. The overhead share is finish carpentry contractors’, the industry the Census Bureau’s NAICS index files residential garage door installation under.
Before you compare quotes
Ask every installer to price the same door, in writing: its size, maker, model and insulation, the springs, the tracks and hangers, the opener or the old one moved over, the trim and weather seal, taking away the old door, and the permit if your city asks for one. Then put the quotes side by side in the garage door quote worksheet, or keep every price for the project in a budget worksheet.
