Laminate flooring installation cost, itemized

A 12 × 10 ft floor in AquaGuard Performance laminate, Mountain Valley takes $422 in flooring at today’s store price, and each day one floor installer works adds about $530 to the price, overhead and profit included (U.S. median wage). Enter your floor, your city and the installer’s time for the whole job, or type a quote to see how many hours of work it pays for.

Your laminate floor at today’s prices

Each figure says where it comes from: the flooring at a store’s posted price, the installer’s time at what a floor installer costs an employer where you live, and the share of the price flooring contractors spend on overhead and keep as profit. The time and the overhead share are yours to change.

Filled in as an example: a 12 × 10 ft floor (120 sq ft) in AquaGuard Performance laminate, Mountain Valley from Floor & Decor, installer’s time not yet typed. Type over any of it with your own floor, flooring and installer’s figures.

Materials at today’s prices$422$3.51 a sq ft of floor. Not yet the job’s price: the labor and the floor installer’s overhead and profit come in when you type the floor installer’s time. Not priced, so not in this total: moisture barrier. Not counted: taking up and hauling away the old floor, leveling the subfloor, transition strips, baseboard or quarter round, moving furniture, sales tax and delivery.

What an hour costs: no flooring maker or public body publishes how long a floor takes to lay, so the estimate counts the time you type and no other. Floor installers in the U.S. earn a median $27.15 an hour (BLS, May 2025). Benefits make up 30.5% of what construction employers spend an hour on pay and benefits (all trades, BLS, June 2026), so an hour of a floor installer at that wage costs an employer about $39, and an 8-hour day about $313.

What moves the price

  • Taking up the old floor and hauling it away, which this estimate leaves out.
  • The floor underneath. AquaGuard’s instructions ask for a clean subfloor, level to 3/16 in within 10 ft: leveling a dip or a hump is a line of its own, and an installer may only price it once the old floor is up. Over concrete, the maker requires a 6-mil plastic moisture barrier, named but not priced in the estimate.
  • The underlayment. AquaGuard’s planks have their pad attached, and its instructions need no other underlayment; a separate underlayment, if you want one for sound, must be one the maker approves: its instructions name Sentinel Protect.
  • Rooms and doorways. Many small rooms, closets and doorways mean more cuts, more transition strips and more time than one open room of the same size.
  • Stairs, which this estimate leaves out.

Whose wage this is

The installer’s wage is the one BLS publishes for floor layers, except carpet, wood and hard tiles: the group that lays vinyl and laminate. The estimate takes the median for your area and raises it to what an hour costs the employer.

What owners paid

When owners hired someone for flooring, carpet, paneling or ceiling tile work in about 2021–2023, the middle half paid $2,000 to $7,000 and the typical job cost $4,000 (Census Bureau). That survey counts every floor covering and room size together, so use it as a check on a whole project, not as the price of a laminate floor: flooring costs by metro.

Before you compare quotes

Ask every installer to price the same floor, in writing: the flooring and who buys it, the size of the rooms, the old floor’s removal, the leveling and what goes under the planks, the transitions and the baseboard. Then put the quotes side by side in the laminate quote worksheet, or keep every price for the project in a budget worksheet.
